Bears Preview
Chicago is coming into Glendale having lost last week on a Washington game-winning Hail Mary pass as time expired, losing 18 - 15 to the Commanders.
After the bad loss, one amplified by cornerback Tyrique Stevenson being caught on camera motioning to the crowd with his back turned to the play as the ball was snapped. Stevenson was contrite and apologized to head coach Matt Eberflus who said that any discipline would be handled internally. Rookie quarterback Caleb Williams said of last week's loss, “We have to focus on going out here and winning this game right now... We had our 24-hour period to feel how we felt but we have to move on.”
Williams struggled last week against the Commanders going 10 of 24 for 131 yards with no touchdowns, no interceptions and three sacks along with a fumbled handoff to lineman Doug Kramer at the goal line. In his previous three games, Williams was a combined 60 of 81 for 687 yards with seven touchdowns and only one interception. He will look to bounce back this weekend against a Cardinal defense that is the 6th worst defense in the league this season.
The Bears have the 11th ranked defense in the league this season giving up 319 yards per game and only allowing 11 touchdowns.
Chicago is ranked 15th in the ESPN NFL Power Rankings for week 9 of the 2024 season.
Cardinals Preview
Arizona has won two games in a row as they narrowly beat the Miami Dolphins last week 28 - 27 and are sitting right in the thick of things in the playoff race. They are 4 - 4 on the season and are tied for first in the NFC West standings with the 49ers and the Seahawks who all have identical records.
Quarterback Kyler Murray said of the early season success, "We’ve won early in the year. Now we have to lock in these next couple months and really continue to get better and focus on what we have to focus on."
Murray was 26 of 36 passing last week with 307 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions, but most notably is the fact that Murray hasn't been sacked in his last three games, which hasn't happened for the Cardinal franchise since 1975 when they were still in St. Louis.
Another cog in the wheel of the winning streak has been kicker Chad Ryland who has made critical kicks in their last two games, making a 34-yard field goal against the Dolphins last week as time expired as well as a 32-yard shot to beat the Chargers, and also had a 35-yard kick with 1:31 left in their win against the 49ers.
Defensively the Cardinals are ranked 27th in the league giving up 376.5 yards per game and having allowed 22 touchdowns. This may be their achilles heel against a good quarterback in Williams.
Arizona is ranked 18th in the ESPN NFL Power Rankings for week 9 of the 2024 season.
How I Use Rithmm Models for my Bears vs Cardinals AI Player Props
This is going to be a tough game to figure out as the books are sitting at -1 for the Cardinals, yet on paper, the Bears look to be the better team in most categories and their defense is markedly better than Arizona's.
There are times you look at a game and are either "gut-sure" about an outcome or vice-versa. But relying on your gut is a recipe for disaster and that's when my Rithmm app comes in to give me a bit of clarity. This line opened at -1.5 and has stayed relatively stable, having dropped down to -1 at many books at the time of this writing, and the money has been heavy to the Bears with a 58% bet split which has helped to push that line down that half point.
I also find it interesting that the money is quite heavy on the Bears to win this thing outright with a 63% bet split to the money line (DK). The public loves this play but that line has continued to go towards Arizona, opening at -105 for the Cardinals and steaming up to -122 and normally a contrarian play.
But in both cases I'm liking what the Rithmm app is cooking. In spite of the wonky lines, I'll be taking the Bears +1 and the Bears money line +105.
