British Open 2024: Round 2 Best Bets & AI Caddie Pick

July 19, 2024

Table of Contents

We as golf fans were promised chaos during this week's British Open, also known as the Open Championship, and we were not disappointed in today's Round 1 at all. Only 17 total golfers shot under par, and complete unknown (and my new mortal enemy for ruining my Shane Lowry first-round leader bet) Daniel Brown leads at six under par.

There promises to be even more craziness as we get going for Round 2, with lots of inclement weather and wind expected later on Friday afternoon. We could see some carnage!

Following every round, we’ll be going through my favorite AI golf picks for the following round, as well as the Rithmm-backed AI Caddie hole score picks I’m rolling with. Let’s get into Round 2!

British Open Round 2 AI Caddie Pick

Brooks Koepka to Birdie or Better Hole 4 (+215)

Well, if there's one thing that continues to hold true year after year, major after major, it is Brooks Koepka coming through in the most important events. He played a terrific 18 holes on Thursday in Round 1 of the Open, and a huge part of that was his birdie streak on the front nine, from holes 4-7.

Given that, it seems like taking a swing on him to get another birdie on the first par 5 of the course is in order, so that's the road we're taking for our AI Caddie pick in Round 2. 56% total odds of this happening gives implied odds of a whole lot better number than +215, even with how difficult the course is playing.

Brooks happens to be 16th in this field in Par 5 Birdie or Better Percentage over the last five years of majors, so taking him on a hole like this makes a ton of sense. He is back to using his old putter, which led him to gaining more than two strokes on the field with the flatstick.

British Open Round 2 Best Bet

Matchup: Sahith Theegala > Joaquin Niemann (-110)

This isn't new guys: we're rolling with Theegala in Round 2s, always. In this matchup against Niemann, despite Niemann shooting six shots better than Theegala in Round 1, we can definitely find a way to side with our guy Sahith.

Let's go to the obvious, first off. Theegala ranks second in Round 2 Scoring Average on the season, sitting just behind Scottie Scheffler with an average of 68.22 over 19 rounds. Niemann obviously doesn't have a Round 2 average since he is no longer on the PGA Tour (LIV Golf stats do not offer this), but his last several rounds show an average of about 69, if you take away his 78 in Round 2 at the Masters (yikes).

Let's look at their Round 1 stats, because they're a bit misleading in my eyes. Despite shooting even par, Niemann lost strokes just about everywhere. He lost strokes in putting and on approach, which already isn't great. He did hit 85% of his fairways, but he has been below-average all season in driving accuracy, so I expect that to regress in a tough Round 2.

Both Theegala and Niemann rank among the golfers with the lowest ball flight apex, so I can imagine the wind may not affect them each that much. I do expect Theegala's stats to pick up in Round 2, as well.
