The Hornets finished their 2023 campaign dead last in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference with a 1 - 10 overall record and going 0 - 5 in conference. They finished their season with a 55 - 14 drubbing at the hands of NC Central University and lost their last 5 games by 7 points or more.

Delaware State has gone 10 seasons without a winning record in the MEAC and will open their Week 0 season with a trip to Hawaii where they will take on a potent Rainbow team that has not lost to an FCS team since 2001.

The Hornets have struggled offensively but will return redshirt sophomore Marqui Adams which should bring them some continuity heading into a new season. Last year, Adams went 110 of 185 and threw for 1452 yards with nine touchdowns and nine picks for a 131.7 QB rating.

Delaware State scored a total of 196 points last season while giving up 415.

Hawaii Preview

Hawaii hasn't played an HBCU team since 1979 when they played Prairie View and has a 20-game winning streak against FCS teams going back to 2011. The Rainbows finished 8th last season in the Mountain West Conference with a 3 - 5 record and had a 5 - 8 record overall.

The Rainbow Warriors will be led by senior quarterback Brayden Schager, who last season went 332 of 525 for 3,542 yards. He threw 26 touchdowns with 14 picks and had a 130.9 QB rating. Schrager also had six games where he threw for more than 300 yards, including a 427 yard loss to San Diego State.

Schrager will have returning senior wide receiver Steven McBride, who in 13 games caught 63 passes for 1024 yards and nine touchdowns and caught three or more passes in each game.
