Preview and Analysis for Utah vs San Antonio AI Prediction

Jazz Preview

Utah has had a very poor start to the season and currently sit in last place in the Western Conference with a 3 - 11 record. They've lost three games in a row including two nights ago in LA where the Lakers beat them 124 - 118 on a night where Dalton Knecht threw up a barrage of 3-pointers and set the NBA rookie single-game record of nine while putting in 37 points.

But this isn't about the Lakers, it's about the Jazz and their defense which has given up 118.9 points per game this season, putting them 26th in the league and an offense that has only put in 108 points per game, also good for 26th in the league.

Lauri Markkanen leads the Jazz offense averaging 31.3 minutes and 18 points per game with 6.5 rebounds and 2.3 assists while Walker Kessler leads the team averaging 10.7 rebounds and 2.8 blocks per game. The Spurs will be without center Walker Kessler who is resting a nagging hip injury.

Utah will need to dominate inside the paint as they did in their last meeting where they outscored the Spurs 54 - 34.

The Jazz are ranked 28th in the ESPN Power Index for 2024.

Spurs Preview

San Antonio comes into this game with a 7 - 8 record, having ended a two-game losing streak two nights ago against the OKC Thunder beating them 110 - 104.

The Spurs enter tonight's game with the 7th best ranked defense giving up 109.6 points per game behind Victor Wembanyama who has been solid on the boards raking in 10.5 rebounds per game along with 3.7 blocks. He also leads the team offensively with 22.7 points and 2.3 assists per game.

But the Spurs will have to do it without Wembanyama who is sitting out tonight with a knee injury as well as Devin Vassell who is also out with a knee injury. With three starters out, the burden will fall to the San Antonio bench. Keldon Johnson hit six 3-pointers against the Thunder and led the team with 22 points and Harrison Barnes contributed 20 points while Chris Paul added 14 points and 11 assists.

The Spurs are ranked 17th in the ESPN Power Index for 2024.

Models for my Jazz vs Spurs AI Prediction

There wasn't a ton I liked coming into this game and my models were pretty erratic in their predictions. Typically I'd consider laying off of a game like this but then a nice little tidbit in the Rithmm app caught my eye.

One of the many nice little tidbits about the Rithmm app is the small bites of information you get when opening a game. The one that grabbed me in this model right away was that it has the total going under.

The money on the game is heavy to the over by a 64% bet split, but the line actually fell from 224 down to 223.5 this afternoon where it seems to be stuck. That little tidbit I mentioned above? If you look at the bottom set of numbers you'll see both teams average scores per game. When combined, this comes out to 223.2. That takes into account everyone is healthy as they have been. But tonight, most of the stars for the Spurs are out and the Jazz are banged up as well.

This feels a little like a trap game to me. The average guys betting like the Spurs record and they like overs. I'm not feeling it tonight and my model is backing that up.

As I said above, I'm not crazy about this game. But that under, I don't know, it just speaks to me.

So I'll be taking under 223.5.
