UCLA Preview

The Bruins enter tonight's game ranked 22nd in the AP Top 25, have an 11 - 5 overall record (2-3 B10). UCLA lost to Maryland three days ago 79 - 61 and will look to end a three-game losing streak.

Bruins head coach Mick Cronin was ejected in the game with 5:11 remaining and, after the loss, tore into his players saying, "So what the truth of it has been, it’s really hard to coach people that are delusional," he said. "The hungry dog gets the bone. We got guys who think they're way better than they are. They are nice kids. They’re completely delusional about who they are."

Tyler Bilodeau led UCLA with 18 points and four rebounds in the loss. Kobe Johnson had seven points with six rebounds and four assists and guard Eric Dailey, Jr. had eight points with five rebounds and an assist.

The Bruins played well on the boards but struggled with 21 turnovers on the night.

UCLA is currently ranked 33rd in the ESPN Men's College Basketball Power Index 2024-25.

Rutgers Preview

The Scarlet Knights come into tonight with an 8 - 8 overall (1 - 4 B10) record and have also lost their last three games including four nights ago against Purdue 68 - 50.

Ace Bailey led the Knights with 17 points and seven rebounds with one assist and Tyson Acuff added 10 points with five rebounds and three assists. Freshman guard Dylan Harper, who leads the team with 20.1 points per game, added six points in the loss.

Harper, who had been stymied by a flu bug last week, and Bailey had combined to average 40 points per game prior to the Purdue game and both look healthy and ready to return to form tonight.

On playing a tough UCLA team, head coach Steve Pikiell said "We've shown signs of that this year, of being tough and having effort…Then we don't finish. We don't do the things that we need to do. We don't make the big plays. We've got to figure that part, most definitely."

Rutgers is currently ranked 78th in the ESPN Men's College Basketball Power Index 2024-25.

Models for UCLA vs Rutgers AI Prediction

There is no doubt that the Bruins are struggling and after Cronin's outburst at his team last week, I'm not sure which team is going to show up. Some players take that kind of thing personally and it motivates them while others go a different direction.

I like this spot for the Knights to upset the Bruins as UCLA has been playing that poorly, and all three of my models love Rutgers covering the +3.5. But I just can't get behind it enough to promote it (full disclosure, yes, I will take a sprinkle on Rutgers tonight).

What I did like here was that my models were very much in agreement on the total. A 54.7% win probability isn't the best I've had but we are getting a Rithmm recommendation on this one so this is the right direction to take. And this line has held pretty true at around 138.5 / 139.0 depending on the book.

Both teams combined are averaging 142.6 points over their last 5 games and both teams have the ability to put up points. With Harper and Bailey both at full strength and averaging 40 points a game and if UCLA can come back from 21 turnovers and, hopefully, be motivated, this should be a fun watch and I expect a high scoring game.
