Vikings Preview
Minnesota closed their 2023 season on a low note, losing their last 4 games and ending the season with a 7 - 10 record while finishing tied for last place in the NFC North. And now they have started their 2024 campaign on a different low note, losing first round pick J.J. McCarthy to a season ending knee injury in the first preseason game this year. While McCarthy wasn't a shoe-in to beat out another first round pick in QB Sam Darnold, he was expected to compete for the starting job and was bringing a new level of excitement to Vikings fans.
Darnold is looking to find some redemption this year after being the backup last season to the 49ers Brock Purdy and spending the previous two seasons in Carolina. The 3rd overall pick in 2018 has thrown for 12,064 yards in his career with 63 touchdowns and 56 interceptions. He'll be throwing to star wideout Justin Jefferson who last season caught 68 passes for 1,074 yards and 5 TD's and WR Jordan Addison, listed as questionable with an ankle injury for Sunday's game, who had 70 receptions for 911 yards and 10 touchdowns.
Defensively the Vikings spent a large portion of the 2023 season blitzing, having done so a little over 51% of the time, but only recording 43 sacks and a 21.9% pressure percentage. With the signing of Jonathan Greenard from the Texans and Andrew Van Ginkle from the Dolphins, they are looking to bolster that blitzing inefficiency with some added pressure up front, the Vikings look to be setting up nicely to hold down their side of the ball.
Giants Preview
The New York Giants come into 2024 with renewed optimism even though they didn't capitalize on any big free agent signings to help bolster an offense that ranked at the bottom of many categories while also giving up on free agent Saquon Barkley who signed with the Eagles this offseason.
Going 6 - 11 in 2023 and finishing 4th in the NFC East, the Giants were able to draft the talented WR Malik Nabers who has big play capabilities and will be the go-to for quarterback Daniel Jones who is looking to rebound after recovering from a torn ACL that found him sitting the last 11 games of the season. In his 6 game stint, Jones completed 108 passes for 909 yards, 2 TD's with 6 interceptions. The overarching storyline for this season really does come down to the play and health of Jones who is looking to return to his 2022 form.
Defensively the Giants bring in new defensive coordinator Shane Bowen who was the DC for the Titans in 2023. Bowen hopes to get some help from newly acquired Brian Burns who came to New York in a trade with the Carolina Panthers. Burns along with Kayvon Thibodeaux will make for a high octane pass rush team that includes Dexter Lawrence who is a solid pass rusher and a beast against the run.
How I Use Rithmm Models for my Vikings vs Giants AI Prediction
The first week of any season is important for both teams to get off to a great start, but some of the trends don’t bode well for one of the teams. For example, while the Vikings are only 1 - 6 straight up in their last 7 regular season games, they are 4 - 1 straight up against the Giants in their last 5 meetings.
Conversely, the Giants are only 6 - 12 straight up in their last 18 games and are only 3 - 9 straight up in their last 12 games played in September including being only 1 - 6 straight up in their last 7 games played in week 1.
The line on this game opened as a Pick'em for both teams (DK -110), but as the days have worn, in spite of seeing the home favorite Giants with a 56% bet split, the line has consistently moved towards the Vikings and now sits at -122 (DK).
My Minnesota Vikings vs New York Giants AI Prediction
With all of the above information in mind, and my Rithmm AI Custom Betting Models above show this game ending in a Vikings victory, I'll be taking the Vikings -122.
