Wyndham Championship 2024: Course Preview & Rithmm Best Bets

There is only one week left in the 2024 PGA Tour regular season before the FedEx Cup playoffs start! We have made it to he 2024 Wyndham Championship, held at Sedgefield Country Club, and there are a handful of golfers in the field vying for one of those 70 spots that they need to reach in order to continue onto the FedEx Cup Playoffs, which kick off next week in Memphis.

Let's dive into my 2024 Wyndham Championship course preview and of course, the best bets according to my Rithmm model that we'll be following this week.

Sedgefield CC Course Preview

Measuring out just over 7,100 yards, Sedgefield is a shorter track. It's a positional course that sees you take less than driver off of the tee on plenty of holes, and emphasizes driving accuracy in order to be in good enough position to attack the greens.

Given that this is a Donald Ross design, complex greens are a part of the equation, so players have to navigate the best ways to get to the greens. The strategy used here will serve players well if they're successful.

Despite this being an easy course in the yearly Tour rota, stay away from the Bermuda rough! It is extremely grabby, especially when wet (as it will get this week) and players have typically experienced at least a 20% drop in Greens in Regulation % when in the rough versus in the fairway. That is the core of good driving accuracy this week and what can happen if you stray left or right.

Another core defense of Sedgefield is the fairway bunkers, which rank as the toughest on Tour when it comes to reaching the green in regulation from them. Despite only 52 total bunkers on the course (seventh-fewest on Tour), these sand traps are dotted at strategic places and will have players in shambles if they venture into them.

My model for the 2024 Wyndham Championship at Sedgefield Country Club is below:

Sedgefield Country Club is a lot like the other second-shot, approach-focused courses we've seen this season, so this model is one that I've used before during this season.

Starting with Course Fit, the most important thing when you play a course like Sedgefield that asks you to play it in a very specific way is being able to adjust to the course. Players here need to be comfortable changing up their usual shots and keep that big club in the bag more often than not. A lot of driving irons and three woods will be used to start holes this week, and players who conform best to the course will have good weeks.

After that, Par 4 Performance is always important, but it takes on a heightened importance this week given the 12 Par 4s that you need to score on. With only two Par 5s (and them being the statistically easiest Par 5 group on the PGA Tour, according to our friends at Betsperts Golf), birdies will need to be found, especially in the nine holes that are under 445 yards this week.

As such, Par 5 Performance takes a bit of a step back this week, but you still need to ace the two very reachable long holes.

Best Betting Picks for the Wyndham Championship 2024

It’s time to build our Rithmm betting card for this week. We’re going to go into each of Rithmm’s favorite picks for Top 20/10/5 based on my model, and whether I agree or disagree with it.

Top 20: Ben Griffin +300 (34.5% Rithmm Win Probability)

It was only two seasons ago in 2022 that Griffin announced himself on the PGA Tour with a fourth-place finish at the Wyndham Championship, and two years later here he is again.

Griffin is excellent on courses with Bermudagrass greens, and I expect a solid performance this week.

Top 10: Seamus Power +700 (18.7%)

Power hasn't had the greatest season, but he seems to excel on courses that are more short and positional in nature. He finished T20 and T12 at the Travelers and RBC Heritage this season, both of which are played at courses like Sedgefield that are positional.

Top 5: Austin Eckroat +1400 (10.1%)

Eckroat hasn't had the greatest summer, with only one top 20 finish in his last nine starts, but he hs played well on shorter courses this season and of course has the win at short and positional PGA National this spring as well.

Sitting at 49th, a lock for the St. Jude but not for the BMW, a good week would push him up further.

Outright Winner Pick for the Wyndham Championship: Taylor Moore +6000 (3.3%)

I love Moore this week.

He has two previous appearances at the Wyndham, a T22 and a T5, and despite coming off a down summer, is poised to add another solid finish to the resume heading into the FedEx Cup Playoffs. At 58th place currently in the standings, Moore is safe, but undoubtedly will want to boost that standing up a handful of places.
